Virtualization Management vKernel has added an application programming interface to its Capacity Analytics Engine family of software, which allows developers, vendors, and users to write programs that take advantage of the data that is provided by the software. The vOPS API was announced at the recent Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference and is available now.

Cisco Live was not just about Cisco; the huge exposition included a broad assortment of partners, many of which had their own announcements to make at the event. Cisco Live drew more than 5,000 attendees and another 40,000 that dropped in virtually. Even HP, which was not in attendance, had something to say in response to Cisco's claims about its switches.

Fluke Networks' latest version of its Network Time Machine (version 8) now offers both instant identification of network versus server problems and root-cause analysis of network and application problems. The all-in-one, 100% packet capture appliance reduces finger pointing and enables users to much more quickly identify the source of a problem, which means they can work on resolving it faster, says the company.

HP is touting a new set of market share numbers as evidence that it is drinking Cisco Systems' milkshake by winning network routing and switching sales away from its more established rival. But a Cisco spokesman responds that with the proper perspective, HP's boast amounts to less than meets the eye.

At its annual customer event, Cisco Live, Cisco said that the latest Catalyst 6500 40Gbit-ready switch features the Supervisor Engine 2T (Sup-2T), a 2-Tbit card that unlocks 80 Gbits per second per slot, 10-Gbit and 10-Gbit Ethernet line cards, IPv4 and IPv6 support from the switch's hardware platform, network virtualization capabilities, L4 to L7 integrated services modules, and application performance and visibility monitoring through a revamped NetFlow.

Promising 80% better performance over its nearest competitor and up to 1.7 million input/output operations per second, Broadcom kicked off Cisco Live with a new Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) solution on what it calls the world’s fastest Converged Network Adapter (CNA).

As companies get comfortable with cloud technology, even smaller organizations are venturing into the idea of having their own private clouds. This fact was corroborated by a Unisphere Research survey of 267 members of the Independent Oracle Users Group (IOUG) at the end of 2010. The survey revealed that 29% of organizations had already deployed an internal cloud, while another 15% were piloting, planning or considering private clouds.
